From Work Visa to Permanent Residency in New Zealand

Published June 2, 2026 | By Care2 Training Limited Editorial Team

New Zealand offers one of the most straightforward pathways from temporary work to permanent residency in the OECD. If you are working on an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) or a Work to Residence visa, understanding the timeline and requirements is essential to planning your future.

The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)

The SMC is a points-based residence visa. You need at least 160 points, which you earn through age, qualifications, work experience, and a skilled job offer in New Zealand. As of 2026, the median wage threshold is a critical factor: your job must pay at least the median wage for your role to qualify as skilled.

Work to Residence Pathway

If you hold an AEWV and work for an accredited employer for two years in a role paying at least 1.5 times the median wage, you may be eligible for residence under the Work to Residence pathway. This is faster than the SMC and does not require a points calculation.

Green List Occupations

New Zealand maintains a Green List of high-demand occupations with streamlined residence pathways. Roles in construction, engineering, health, and IT feature prominently. If your occupation is on the Green List, you may qualify for direct residence or a fast-tracked Work to Residence visa.

Practical Timeline

Most candidates spend 6-8 months securing a job and visa, 24 months accumulating work experience, and 6-12 months processing their residence application. From arrival to residency, the realistic timeline is 3-4 years. Our legal partners ensure every application is compliant and complete, reducing the risk of delays.
