New Zealand Accredited Employer Work Visa: What You Need to Know
Published May 28, 2026 | By Care2 Training Limited Immigration Team
The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is New Zealand's primary temporary work visa pathway. Introduced to replace the Essential Skills Work Visa, the AEWV requires employers to become accredited and jobs to pass a "Job Check" before migrants can apply. Here is what candidates and employers need to understand.
What is Employer Accreditation?
Before an employer can hire someone on an AEWV, they must apply for and maintain accreditation with Immigration New Zealand (INZ). This involves proving the business is genuine, financially stable, and committed to employing migrants ethically. Accreditation must be renewed every 12 months.
The Job Check
After accreditation, the employer must pass a Job Check for each role they want to fill. This involves advertising the role locally for at least 14 days to prove no suitable New Zealander is available. Some roles on the Green List or paying at least 1.5 times the median wage may be exempt from advertising.
Median Wage Requirements
As of 2026, the median wage for AEWV roles is NZD 29.66 per hour. Employers must pay at least this amount (or the market rate, whichever is higher) for the visa to be approved. Some roles in specific industries may have different thresholds, so always verify with our team.
Visa Duration and Conditions
The AEWV is granted for up to 3 years, depending on the job and contract length. You must work for the accredited employer specified in your visa. If you wish to change employers, your new employer must also be accredited, and a new Job Check may be required.
Pathway to Permanent Residency
After working in New Zealand for a qualifying period, AEWV holders can apply for residence through the Skilled Migrant Category or the Straight to Residence pathway (for Green List roles). Many of our candidates achieve permanent residency within 2-3 years of their initial arrival.
