Italy Student Visa (Type D) Step-by-Step Guide

Published June 11, 2026 | By Care2 Training Limited Editorial Team

Italy is one of Europe's most affordable study destinations, offering world-class programmes in design, engineering, and business at a fraction of UK or US costs. The Type D National Visa (Long Stay) is required for any course longer than 90 days. Here is a step-by-step breakdown.

Step 1: University Admission & Pre-Enrolment

Before applying for a visa, you must secure admission and complete pre-enrolment on the Universitaly portal. This is mandatory for all non-EU students. You will receive an enrolment letter, which is a core visa document. Processing takes 4-8 weeks, so apply early.

Step 2: Document Preparation

You will need a valid passport, proof of accommodation in Italy, financial means (approx. €6,000 per year), health insurance covering at least €30,000, and a nulla osta (entry clearance) from the university. All documents must be translated into Italian and legalised with an apostille where applicable.

Step 3: Visa Application & Appointment

Submit your application at the Italian consulate or visa centre in your home country. Appointments can be scarce during peak season (June-August), so book at least 6 weeks in advance. Visa processing typically takes 15-30 calendar days.

Step 4: Residence Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno)

Within eight days of arriving in Italy, you must apply for a residence permit at the local post office (Kit Postale). This converts your visa into legal residency and is required to open a bank account and access healthcare. Our Italy team assists with every step, including airport pickup and permit applications.
