IELTS vs French CLB: Which Test Do You Need?

Language proficiency is one of the most common stumbling blocks in international migration. The test you need depends entirely on your destination country, visa category, and programme. Here is a clear, side-by-side comparison to help you choose the right exam and avoid wasting time and money.

Canada: TEF/TCF for FMP vs IELTS for Express Entry

If you are applying for the Francophone Mobility Programme (FMP), you need a French test: TEF Canada or TCF Canada, achieving CLB 5 minimum. For Express Entry or Provincial Nominee Programmes, IELTS General Training is the gold standard. Some candidates submit both for additional CRS points, but it is not mandatory.

United Kingdom: IELTS Academic for Student Visa

UK universities typically require IELTS Academic with an overall band of 6.0-6.5, depending on the institution and programme. The UK Student visa itself does not mandate a specific test, but your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is issued only after meeting the university's English requirement.

New Zealand: IELTS or PTE for AEWV

For the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), you need to meet the median wage threshold and demonstrate functional English. IELTS General (minimum 4.0 in each band) or PTE Academic (minimum 29) are both accepted. Some employers require higher scores depending on the role.

Italy: English-Taught Programmes vs Italian Requirements
